A Modern Horizons 3 early look. 

Modern Horizons sets are some of my favourite sets in Magic due to the addition of new cards to the Modern format along with valuable well needed reprints. With Modern Horizons 3 it looks like it is already shaping up to be a killer set, with many interesting reprints and new cards. Often mechanics declared too powerful for standard see support in Modern Horizons, giving new cards to 60 card players alongside commander players alike. I personally am rather excited to see what is to come in Modern Horizons 3.              

 

Allied Fetchland Reprint

To start us off, the big question has been answered, we will be getting an allied fetch land reprint. These cards are staples in any deck, even commander players can make great use out of the fixing these lands often provide. Personally, with this reprint I am looking forward to completing my sets of allied fetch lands as Modern Horizons 2 let me do so for the enemy fetch lands. Naturally these cards usually go for small price, but this is a much-needed reprint. The Allied Fetch lands feature borderless and retro border frames in addition to regular printings featuring all new artwork. Overall this is what has sold me on MH3 as a set and I will definitely be picking up additional copies of these cards. 


 

Energy Counter Support

It really seems like Wizards of the Coast have taken a look back at one of my favourite mechanics in recent times. That being energy, energy is an often under looked mechanic from the Kaladesh block of the mid 2010s that hasn’t received any support till the recent Universes Beyond fallout commander decks. 

Now with Modern Horizons 3 it seems we are receiving even more energy support in the form of another Energy preconstructed commander deck alongside cards inside Modern Horizons 3’s actual set that will bring additional support to energy in 60 card formats. This is much needed as Energy is a rather fun mechanic focused on the gathering of a unique resource. Which (In my opinion) makes for interesting deck building and gameplay. I’ll definitely be nabbing up some energy cards from this set.

 

More flip-Planeswalkers (or Baby-Planeswalkers)

Finally the third thing I am most excited for with the release of Modern Horizons 3 is the addition of more flip planeswalkers. I started playing magic when the original cycle of the “Baby Planeswalkers” were in standard and they were some of my favourite cards to build inside my early 60-card decks prior to me playing Commander. I am excited to see a full new cycle of planeswalkers like this as often we get an insight into our favourite realm hoppers backstories and how they came to be the icons we know inside the lore of Magic the Gathering. I’d love to see a flip Ashiok or Ob Nixilis in addition to Ajani. But I guess we’ll have to wait till the rest of spoiler season to find out for sure. 

 

Overall

I am rather happy with what we have seen from Wizards of the Coast so far and will definitely be playing in a few prereleases for this upcoming set. There seems to be a bunch of interesting looking cards already. I know Liam here at Hobby Lords will be thrilled to play around with the new Emrakul alongside other Eldrazi we have yet to see. I can’t wait to see what else is to come.
